\b0 The Garden of Eden contained many symbolic trees endowed with mysterious attributes. Two exceptional t
rees stood out from the rest: the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. \par
The first tree was symbolic of immortality and whoever ate its fruit would not die. Indeed, when Adam and Eve were expelled from Eden, they were no longer ab
le to eat the fruit of this tree for God had placed a Cherubim armed with a flaming sword to guard over it, and so they became mortal. As long as Adam and Eve lived in the earthly paradise without eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, they
were happy and blessed. They had no need of clothes, they did not have to work, they were immortal and free of pain and disease. When they ate the fruit of knowledge and became capable of distinguishing between good and evil, they saw that they were nake
d, and were ashamed, and covered themselves with leaves and branches. Eating the fruit of this tree, then, meant that they obtained a knowledge that satisfied the appetite of man but ignored the laws of God, and so led to the discovery of evil.\par
